Minnesota State Senator Kreun Celebrates Success at Metro North ABE’s ESL Bridge to CNA Graduation
Minnesota State Senator Michael Kreun recently attended the graduation ceremony for Metro North Adult Basic Education’s (ABE) English as a Second Language (ESL) Bridge to Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program. He celebrated the achievements of students who are transforming their lives through education and career development. The event, held at the Columbia Heights/Fridley Adult Education Center, highlighted the success of individuals who have overcome language barriers and gained valuable skills to enter the high-demand healthcare field.
The ESL Bridge to CNA program offered by Metro North ABE is a unique initiative that combines ESL instruction with CNA training, equipping students with the language and technical skills necessary to thrive in their new careers. The program addresses two critical needs: providing a pathway for immigrants and refugees to integrate into the workforce and helping to fill the workforce shortage in Minnesota’s healthcare sector.
Senator Kreun's presence at the graduation underscores the importance of supporting initiatives that empower individuals while addressing statewide challenges. In his remarks, Kreun commended the graduates for their hard work and perseverance.
“I encourage and commend those who continue to seek lifelong learning,” Kreun said. “I’m in my first term as a senator, and I’ve had to learn a lot! But like you, I am feeling the rewards of learning. I'm not done yet. I've got more learning to do, and I hope you are planning for more learning as well.”
The program is particularly impactful for its participants, who are new to the country and face significant challenges as they navigate a new culture, language, and job market. Through this program, students receive hands-on training in patient care, communication skills, and workplace readiness, ensuring they are well-prepared to meet the demands of their new roles. Graduates leave the program ready to take the CNA certification exam and begin a career as a Certified Nursing Assistant— a role in high demand across Minnesota. The state continues to face a shortage of healthcare workers, and programs like this help address that gap while providing economic mobility for individuals and their families.
During the ceremony, graduates shared their stories, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to build a better future. One graduate from Blaine said, “I took this class because when I was cleaning at my job, the host needed medical help. I felt powerless, only being able to call 911. I enrolled in the class to know how to keep people around me safe, but now I see a whole new career for me.”
Columbia Heights Adult Education Supervisor Kathleen Moriarty emphasized the collaborative efforts that make the program possible. “This program is a testament to the power of partnerships. This Integrated Education and Training course is offered in partnership with Prime Time Medical, LLC and Crest View Senior Communities. From the teachers and trainers who dedicate their time and expertise to community leaders and policymakers like Senator Kreun, who advocate for adult education funding, it takes a village to create these opportunities.”
The graduation ceremony ended with cheers and applause as graduates received their certificates, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. For the graduates, their families, and the community, the event served as a powerful reminder of the transformative potential of education and opportunity.
Metro North ABE’s Bridge ESL to CNA program continues to make a lasting impact, equipping individuals with the tools they need to succeed while enriching Minnesota’s workforce and communities.
