Students not enrolled in high school or who have not graduated from high school may be eligible to take the GED. The minimum age requirement to take the GED® tests is 19 but this may be waived under certain circumstances if you are 17 or 18 years old. Payments should be made online after you create an account with GED® testing services and register. You can pay for each test individually when you schedule your test or pay for all four tests at once (Individual testing centers' fees may vary).

Each test costs $36. The total cost for all four tests is $144.

Payment forms

GED® Testing Service accepts debit, credit, or gift card payments. Receipts for payment are emailed to the purchaser.

Minnesota GED test takers will be able to take their first GED test in each subject for free while funding lasts. The state of Minnesota will waive the fee for a tester’s first GED test in each subject using the promo code MNHSEFREE.  

This promo code can be used when scheduling tests until the funding runs out.  Please note that this subsidy will apply to testers who:

• Select “Minnesota” as their testing location in ged.com;
• Live in Minnesota;
• Schedule testing at any non-corrections testing centers in Minnesota and in approved test centers in border communities as requested by local ABE staff in Minnesota; and
• Use the promo code in their account when scheduling and paying for tests.

If a tester does not pass or does not show up for testing, they will not receive the subsidy for the retake tests; they will have to pay the standard retake test price.

Once the subsidy expires or runs out, there will be no state subsidy left and testers will have to pay the full testing fee ($36/first test in each subject or $144 per complete battery). We cannot predict exactly when this subsidy will run out and when it does, the subsidy will automatically shut off through GED.com’s system.

The GED® has four tests or modules that can be taken in any order. Tests are computer-based and have to be taken at an approved GED testing center. The GED test will be about seven and a half hours long with the timing for each subject area as follows:

Reasoning through Language Arts (RLA)

• Time Limit: About 150 minutes, including a 10-minute break

Metro North ABE has two Pearson Vue Approved GED® testing locations! 

The GED testing center located at Anoka Technical College is currently accepting testing appointments. To register for GED tests at this location, please create an account on GED.com and schedule an appointment. Testing appointments are available Mondays from 9 a.m to 2 p.m.

The Metro North ABE GED testing center in Blaine is currently accepting testing appointments.  To register for GED tests at this location, please create an account on GED.com and schedule an appointment. Testing appointments are available Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Test center closures

Metro North ABE is sponsored by the local school district's Community Education programs. Anoka and Blaine test centers are part of the Anoka-Hennepin Schools. If Anoka-Hennepin Schools closes due to weather emergencies, Anoka and Blaine test centers will also close.  Blaine will also close if Spring Lake Park School District closes. For current information about closings, you can check your local news station, the Metro North ABE website, or call 763-433-4200 for a recorded message.

The new GED® test series is computer based and has to be taken at an approved GED® testing center. Below is a list of some computer skills that will be helpful for students taking the test.

• Mouse skills: click, drag and drop, scroll

• Word processing skills: basic keyboarding, cut, copy, paste, undo/redo, insert, enter and hard return, spacing, backspace, highlight

• Calculator: online calculator for certain questions (TE-30XS). Online tools that will be available to test takers: directional tools, calculator, calculator reference sheet, formulas sheet, math symbols, flagging for further review, item review screen

• Navigation skills for the computer based test: previous, next, close, and page tab 

Seven types of questions on the modules

• Multiple choice

• Fill-in-the-blank

• Drag-and-drop: drag small images, numerical expressions, words, or short phrases to drop targets on the computer screen

• Hot spot: click on a specific place on an embedded image to select an item based on their characteristics or plot or select points on a graph or map

• Drop-down: choose from a drop-down menu of 5-8 choices to complete a statement; the selection will then appear as part of the text

• Short answer: type a few sentences or a short paragraph in response to text and/or a graph, chart, or image

• Extended response: type a writing sample that will be scored on three aspects:

1. 1. Analysis of arguments and use of evidence
   2. Development of ideas and organizational structure
   3. Clarity and command of standard English conventions

A minimum score of 145 is necessary to pass each individual test. A score of 200 is the highest score for each test. There are three score levels you can achieve.

• GED® Passing Score: at or higher than the minimum needed to demonstrate high school equivalency level skills and abilities
• GED® College Ready: at or higher than the minimum needed to demonstrate college readiness as well as career readiness
• GED® College Ready + Credit: may qualify students for up to ten hours of college credit
