Student's words about our amazing volunteers
When you are in school and you are struggling with math, science, social studies, and ELA, we have four volunteers to help you.
First, we have Randy who is here on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Randy helps with anything and everything you need. He works with individuals or in groups. On Friday we do reading with Randy, which helps with reading.
Randy started eight years ago, he started with helping teachers. You would want to meet Randy for sure. Randy has helped me with a lot of different subjects and has helped me pass some of my tests. Randy likes the social aspect of it, he loves to help others.
Second, we have Charlie who is here on Thursdays, but sometimes he comes during the week too. Charlie also works with individuals or in groups with any subject. Charlie has been volunteering for twelve years, since retirement, and at this school for about a year. Charlie has a strong belief that, "I need to leave the world better when I leave than when I came." The best way he could do it is with education, and it is enjoyable working with students. Charlie focuses on math, but also enjoys helping in other subjects as well
Third, we have Carl who is here on Tuesday and Thursday. Carl has been volunteering for a year and a half. He retired two years ago. He discovered he likes to keep busy and likes to help students understand the world around them and get to their goals in life. Carl also helps in beginner reading class and other subjects, and he also teaches science in the GED class. Carl likes meeting people, and he discovered he likes teaching and wants to develop that skill. Carl also works with individuals and groups.
Finally, we have Sandy who is here on Wednesdays. Sandy helps with students and teachers if needed. Sandy has been volunteering for less than a year and has volunteered with other GED students in Minneapolis. She likes helping students in math, and she also works with individuals. Sandy stated that she "likes meeting new people and she misses teaching." Sandy likes seeing the students get better and prepare for the GED. Sandy enjoys retirement, and she discovered she likes to keep busy, but also have free time.
Having these volunteers during the week has helped a lot of students achieve their goals.
