Sorman Scholarship Recipient Announced – Quarter 1, 2011-12
Daniel Hernandez, Metro North ABE- Anoka Technical College, is the most recent Sorman Scholarship winner, receiving the $250 award for the quarter ending September 31, 2011.
Mr. Hernandez is an Ecuadorian native that attended programming at Metro North ABE for 5 months. During the five months, he was known as “everyone’s friend”. He didn’t miss a chance to meet staff and learners and he shared his passion for learning and life with everyone he came into contact with.
With a successful career as an actor in Ecuador, Mr. Hernandez did not ever imagine he would someday be living in Minnesota. As he pointed out at his award acceptance event in November, not everyone dreams of coming to the United States. But Mr. Hernandez came in the pursuit of love. After meeting his future wife in Ecuador, they communicated over the phone and by email by translating their conversations into each other’s languages- English to Spanish and Spanish to English. Many hours of talking only resulted in a few minutes of conversation in the beginning of their relationship. Two years later, he joined her in Minnesota, where they now reside.
His incredible drive for learning has taken him a long way from those first conversations in halting English. For years, Mr. Hernandez went everywhere with a pocket size dictionary, and taught himself new words in English. He enrolled in English Language Learning classes at Metro North ABE to improve his English pronunciation and grammar.
Interested in pursuing a new career in the United States, he knew that he would need to earn a college credential, and he set his sites on the Occupational Therapy program at Anoka Technical College. He began attending brush up adult basic education classes with Metro North ABE – Anoka Technical College in May 2011. In November 2011, he successfully met the Accuplacer placement scores for admission into the Occupational Therapy program and will begin class in January 2012 at Anoka Technical College.
The Robert Sorman Scholarship is awarded to an ABE learner that demonstrates exceptional dedication and commitment to learning and pursuing higher education once they leave Metro North Adult Basic Education.
Metro North ABE is a nine-member consortium of school districts that provide exceptional adult education services to the residents of the Anoka Hennepin, Brooklyn Center, Columbia Heights, Centennial, Elk River, Forest Lake, Fridley, Spring Lake Park and Saint Francis school districts. |
